Problems of the health care profession and suggestions for reform are presented in this book on the U.S. health care delivery system. The book is divided into four sections. Section I, "Health and Health Care Problems for the American People," provides a general discussion on health, disease, and illness, and the importance of health maintenance and prevention. In section II, "U.S. Health Care Delivery System: Current Status," the role of government and financing in the delivery of health care is discussed and characteristics of hospitals and hospital personnel are examined. Quality control and medical licensure are extensively reviewed in this section also. Medical education is the subject of section III. The history of medical education in the U.S. is traced and the current status of the U.S. medical schools is examined. The fourth section examines the problems of the health care system and offers some possible solutions. It is concluded that changes must be made to improve the health care delivery system and that these changes must begin at the medical school level. The importance of the medical educator is stressed. An outline for a new system of medical education is presented that emphasizes an orientation to health rather than disease. (Author/SF)
