Evaluation of Army Representation. Final Report.
Eitelberg, Mark J.
The extent to which Army enlistments represent a cross-section of the national male population was determined in this study of available Army enlistee data. Quantitative data from several existing sources are used, including the National Longitudinal Study (NLS) and the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. Focus of the analysis is on the demographic, socioeconomic, quality, and attitudinal measures of Army representation. Generally, the results show that Army enlistees are only somewhat different from their civilian counterparts. Where divergence does exist, the Army still maintains a balance in terms of national policy objectives. The findings include the following: there is underrepresentation of Army enlistees in the above-average and below-average categories of intelligence, blacks are overrepresented in the Army, individuals from lower socioeconomic strata are overrepresented in the Army while those from higher economic levels are underrepresented, Army enlistees are overrepresentative of the South and underrepresentative of the North, and those who enter the Army express greater changes of attitudes following high school graduation than their civilian peers. (This report includes fifty-two data tables.) (EM)
