To Market a Drug.
Hay, J. E.; And Others
This unit is one of a group of units written to fit the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies (CSYS) chemistry course, but it could be used in most Sixth Form courses. It includes: (1) teacher notes on contents, methods, and preparation; (2) two sets of data booklets and decision sheets for two new drugs (one data booklet based on 1960 information and the other on 1980 information); (3) drug identity and background booklets for all students; and (4) a packet of seven reprints of relevant documents. Teachers distribute the two data booklets (chemical information, side effects, and points for discussion) to separate groups without any reference to dates of information; later, the teacher discloses the 20 year gap in the two sets of data. The teacher's role in promoting class discussion is of great importance, and the activity is designed to give students a clear understanding of the fact that decisions of the chemical industry are multidisciplinary.
