This collection of 10 papers aims to provide teachers at all levels with ideas on a number of important aspects of mathematics education. The Report of the Committee on Inquiry into the Teaching of Mathematics (Cockcroft Report) has provoked wide discussion in England, and the papers examine some contemporary issues in school mathematics in light of this and other recent reports. Examined are current issues and problems in mathematics teaching, teaching mathematics in primary and middle schools and in secondary schools, difficulties in learning mathematics, organization and methods, the slow learner and the gifted child, calculators in the classroom, games and recreations, links between mathematics and other subjects, and the assessment and evaluation of school mathematics.
