In this article, the author explains why City Lit's work with adults who stammer has won recognition and why the adult education setting is ideally suited for the work. Stammering is a complex disorder that is often misunderstood by the general public. Its impact is frequently underestimated. Stammering can have a profound effect on people's lives--from influencing personal relationships and work, to undermining a person's self-esteem and confidence. For over 30 years, City Lit has offered a comprehensive programme to adults who stammer, the only provision of its kind in the UK, and considers it highly appropriate to offer stammering therapy in an adult learning environment. At the college, people who stammer are able to benefit from the opportunity to learn about stammering, to learn techniques for managing it, and to take on the role of educating others about stammering. Another advantage of the adult education setting--something that makes the programme unique--is the range and depth of stammering therapy courses offered by City Lit. The variety of courses ensures progression routes and the programme is designed to meet the needs of people who stammer at all stages of their learning and stammering journey. Courses are offered in different formats and at different times to suit the varying needs of learners and to ensure that no learner need be prohibited from attending a course due to financial constraints or other commitments, such as work or family.
