Unleash the Adventurer…Using the Adventure Sack
Nash, Julia
Primary Science, n156 p31-32 Jan 2019
The Adventure Sack idea arose out of setting up a Forest School in a local National Trust mixed British woodland. A dilemma arose: how would 'stuff' be transported to the Forest School? The idea came to use a box of currently unused school logoed rucksacks that had only occasional outings on school trips. All of the Forest School stuff -- first aid kit, essential water and other equipment -- could go in these rucksacks. During the first few weeks of the opening of Forest School the children visibly enjoyed carrying the rucksacks. They began to associate wearing a rucksack with instantly becoming an explorer: it was part of their explorer 'uniform'. Adventure Sacks could be easily adapted to address any area of the curriculum and support children's enthusiasm and imagination. Adding the practicality of the sack contents builds in the aspect that this simple rucksack contains something that can be used: children instantly and freely ask themselves the question, 'How can I use what is inside to help me find out and learn?'
