The United Kingdom (U.K.) offers excellent safety policies and resources from which Technology and Engineering (T&E) educators across the world could benefit. In the U.K., Design and Technology (D&T) is taught in most primary (elementary) and secondary schools. D&T has origins related to crafts and domestic skills; however, D&T now focuses on designing and making in response to a design brief or context. England's national curriculum specifies that children are expected to learn about and use a full range of materials in designing and making (Hardy, 2018). This extensive list of D&T topics is accompanied by very strict safety rules and regulations from the British Standards Institute, with which U.K. schools and universities must comply. D&T education is governed by a document called BS 4163:2014 (BSI, 2014) that is specifically focused on health and safety considerations within D&T education facilities. Although this document is not the law, it has been established as the precedent that U.K. teachers and administrators will be judged against if there is an accident in their school. All school D&T programs are expected to comply with BS 4163:2014 or face fines and potential imprisonment. BS 4163:2014 states that teachers should be trained to industry standards and that training, provided by the Design and Technology Association (DATA), is called the Accreditation Scheme. The Accreditation Scheme is offered to all D&T teachers, technical support staff, classroom support staff (teaching assistants, paraprofessionals, etc.), and school site/maintenance staff that will be involved in D&T instruction. These policies, in conjunction with those already published by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA), could provide the foundation for developing internationally recognized safety guidelines for D&T and T&E education.
