Statistics in the Speed Cameras Debate
Girard, Jean Claude
Teaching Statistics: An International Journal for Teachers, v35 n1 p61-65 Spr 2013
This article illustrates how statistical arguments can be used to influence public policy... for better or for worse. Road safety has improved in a signi?cant way since the 1970s in developed countries. If road casualties and number of killed have decreased, there are many reasons for this, including improvement in roads, building of motorways, better active security in vehicles (crumple zone, seat belts, airbags, improved brake systems etc.), reduced speed limits, anti-- drinking campaigns, and, maybe, an increasing awareness of drivers about the risks of driving. The European Commission (EC) has launched a program for improving road safety over the years 2011-2020 (EC 2010). It takes all these points into account but does not mention speed cameras.
