Epictetus was born in about the year 55 AD, in the Roman province of Phyrgia in what people now call central Turkey. A slave at birth and a limp due to his master's punishment, Epictetus did not stymie his interest in seeking a balanced perspective on life. He became one of the leading stoics of his age. He taught a variety of proteges, including Arrian, who became a counsel under the Emperor Hadrian. It was Arrian who, after Epictetus' death in 135 AD, collected his master's teachings into eight books of "Discourses", the first four of which survive. Additionally, a brief compendium of these thoughts was compiled and widely distributed under the title of "Enchiridion", or "Manual for Living". In Epictetus' "Manual" he emphasized the keynote tenets of his stoicism. This article presents a concise depiction of ten key points drawn from Epictetus' "Manual for Living". These ten summaries are hoped to be of value to modern day educational leaders who struggle with facilitating growth while often facing great odds.
