Leading Culture Change: Moving from Transformational Initiatives to a Transformational Institution
Lowery-Hart, Russell
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v54 n3 p5-10 2022
For the technologies, curriculum, skills, and subsequent successes to be realized, higher education must first rethink and rebuild its culture. Yet the foundation of this necessary transformation may come as a surprise. Instead of "higher edding" solutions (wrapping innovation in cumbersome bureaucracy and complex procedures and policies), institutions must embrace the practical and personal. Innovations, revisions, and reimaginations will only work if schools rebuild their cultures around one concept--love. One school in the panhandle of Texas, Amarillo College, has proven the power of loving students to success. The lessons learned from this dramatic transformation cut across institutions and even sectors. In this article, Russell Lowery-Hart, President of Amarillo College describes how Amarillo College developed the systemic Culture of Caring targeting the removal of poverty barriers. The College's reformation required rebuilding the institution in three interwoven parts: culture, impact, and communication. The College had to build a culture of innovation, scale their efforts for impact, and engage in authentic communication. Education attainment was the imperative. Listening to their students was the conduit. Loving their students was the foundation.
