Mental Health Referrals: A Survey of Practicing School Psychologists
Villarreal, Victor
School Psychology Forum, v12 n2 p66-77 Sum 2018
Schools are the most common entry point for accessing mental health services for school-age children. Children may access school-based services as part of a multitiered system of supports or other service models, such as school-based health centers. However, limitations associated with school-based services (e.g., lack of time, inability to address severe problems, inadequate numbers of related service centers) require that schools be prepared to make referrals to community mental health providers (CMHPs). The purpose of this study was to survey practicing school psychologists (N = 194) regarding their experiences in making mental health referrals. Results suggest that the number of referrals from school psychologists to CMHPs is low and that barriers to the referral process regularly involve parents. Implications for improving practice are discussed.
