Navigating Emotional, Intellectual, and Physical Violence Directed toward LGBTQ Students and Educators
Check, Ed; Ballard, Katy
Art Education, v67 n3 p6-11 May 2014
In this article, the potentially harmful effects of bullying toward LGBTQ students are demonstrated through personal narratives, encouraging tolerance and the freedom to create and express through art. As openly gay and lesbian arts educators, the authors have learned that it is vital for them not only to invite gay and lesbian lives into teaching classrooms (Christensen, 2001), but also to include LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Queer) information in curricula (Johnston, 2001; Lyman, 2001). Over the years, the authors have both developed strategies where they share their lives, art, and research with their students (Ballard, 2013; Check, 1996). Like others before them, they continue to struggle to figure out ways to tell their stories in homophobic environments (Lampela & Check, 2003).
