Helping General Physical Educators and Adapted Physical Educators Address the Office Of Civil Rights Dear Colleague Guidance Letter: Part VI--Addressing Professional Preparation for Serving Students with Disabilities in Extracurricular Athletic Programs

Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v84 n8 p43-45 2013
One of the major components in the development of quality extracurricular athletic (ECA) programs that involves the infusion of students who have been classified as educationally disabled is the preparation of effective, high-quality physical educators who will assume coaching positions (U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2012). These coaches must possess the attitudes, knowledge, and skills to include competent students on teams by being mindful of the students' medical margin of safety and the safety of others. In addition, these professionals need to develop and implement separate but equal athletic programs for those students with disabilities who may not possess the required competencies to participate on traditional athletic teams. This article provides a brief overview of how professional preparation should train students to fulfill the roles needed to help implement these extracurricular programs in a direct or consultative manner.
