Teacher Perceptions of the Integration of Digital Technologies in the Elementary Classroom
Crystal Werkheiser
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D.Ed.Lead. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The integration of technology to the elementary school classroom presents teachers with both new opportunities and challenges. Effective integration of classroom technology involves much more than merely giving students access to computers and mobile devices, as teachers' attitudes and beliefs about technology are important in facilitating meaningful use in the classroom (Ertmer, 1999). The purpose of this dissertation in practice, set in a Southeast Texas public school district, was to identify teacher perceptions of factors impacting digital technology integration in the elementary classroom, and the research is justified by a concerning lack of progress by elementary students in that district using current technology methods on state standardized tests. The design of this qualitative study involved one-to-one interviews of teachers regarding their perceptions of the impacts of technology integration in their classrooms, including both benefits and barriers they perceive. Findings of the study showed teachers' perceptions were organized thematically around concerns about their own preparation, attitudes, and beliefs; student skill development; and barriers to implementation. By identifying areas in which teachers might better facilitate the integration of technology in the elementary classroom, the researcher in this study seeks to help districts tailor their support and professional development approaches. To that end, the project attached to this dissertation in practice is a proposed professional development plan, theoretically grounded in Kolb's adult learning theory, in which the primary learning objective is that district faculty, staff, and administration will demonstrate mastery of technology competencies, including teachers' knowledge and application of ISTE standards in their lesson planning.
