Student Perception on Engagement at a Community College: A Qualitative Investigation
Carey B. Miller
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Tarleton State University
As employers struggle to fill 9.5 million vacant positions with only 6.5 million workers available across the United States, the role of community colleges becomes critical in educating workers. Open-door access and lower-tuition costs make community college an essential resource for people to access higher education; however, research shows the current graduation rate of community colleges is less than 50%. In this qualitative study, the researcher examined student perceptions of social and academic integration opportunities at a community college in Texas. The findings of this study confirmed students felt they had opportunities to engage inside and outside the classroom. These opportunities helped with student persistence.
