The Barriers Hispanic Students Face in Higher Education
Jennifer Leigh Hill-Carrasco
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
There is a need to fully understand why Hispanic students are not as successful as other cohorts of students are when completing college. In past research, the focus has been on persistence and retention, but understanding the need for connection and feelings of campus immersion have been absent. The research questions investigated the barriers that Hispanic students face in higher education and explored the areas of student engagement in the classroom and during office hours, the utilization of student support services, and students' assimilation into campus culture. This qualitative study employed a convenience sampling method due to the college's location and its status as a Hispanic serving institution. The target population of the study was Hispanic students attending a South Texas junior college. The key demographics were male and female self-identifying Hispanic students ranging in age from 18 to 50. The data were collected in small focus groups using predetermined interview questions. The questions addressed three different sectors of engagement: classroom, support services, and campus culture. The significance of this study was to determine why this cohort continues to have lower rates of connectivity on campus, resulting in low transfer and graduation rates. The contribution of this work could add to previous knowledge about this nationwide issue as well as lead to new findings and establish new best practices.
