Best Practices Strategies for Implementing Belonging and Inclusivity in Higher Education: A Phenomenological Study
Kimberly Anderson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D.Ed.Lead. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This phenomenological study explores best practice strategies of Chief Diversity Officers (CDOs) in Texas universities in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Due to the passing of Senate Bill 17, most Chief Diversity Officers were reclassified, and departmental modifications were made. Eight CDOs with a minimum of two years of experience participated in this study. Through recorded and transcribed interviews, recurring themes were systematically identified and analyzed. The research was guided by three primary questions: (1) What strategies do Texas higher education CDOs find most effective for implementing DEI in their institutions? (2) What recommendations do these officers have for maintaining sustainable DEI changes? (3) What strategies are needed to foster inclusivity among all groups? Key findings emphasize the pivotal role of leadership in developing effective DEI strategies and the broader implications of DEI beyond race, affecting marginalized communities and stakeholders. The study's implications can aid higher education institutions in formulating best practices in alignment with Senate Bill 17. Further research is recommended to explore the emotional impacts of dismantling DEI initiatives. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
