An Examination of the Relationship between UIL Extracurricular Activity Participation Rate and A-F Accountability Rating Scores Involving Selected Texas Regional Educational Service Center School Districts
Charles Austin Mims
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Tarleton State University
With the introduction of key federal, state, and local legislation that has placed an ever-increasing emphasis on improving overall school academic performance, it has become vitally important for educational leaders to explore any and all methods that may positively impact the academic outcomes of their respective educational institutions. While the impact that extracurricular activity participation has on individual student measures of academic achievement has been well researched, the current body of literature does not adequately examine the impact that school-wide rates of extracurricular activity participation has on school-wide measures of academic accountability. In order to address this gap in knowledge, this study examined the impact that UIL extracurricular activity participation rate has on the A-F accountability rating scores of selected Texas public high schools within TEA's education service center regions 10, 11, and 12 in 2018-2019. An observational research design, which employed a quantitative method of inquiry, was used to address the research questions. Using a digital survey tool, 262 high school principals were surveyed for this study, from which 218 study participants were identified. The data collected from the survey was then compared to data collected from TEA's Texas School Report Cards in order to examine the relationship that UIL extracurricular activity participation rate has on the A-F accountability rating scores of the participant schools. By using a quantitative research methodology, this study explored the statistically significant relationships between the associated variables. The results of a Spearman's Rank-Order Correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between UIL extracurricular activity participation rate and overall A-F accountability, r[subscript s] = 0.763, Student Achievement domain, r[subscript s] = 0.729, School Progress, r[subscript s] = 0.493, and Closing the Gaps, r[subscript s] = 0.700. The results of a multiple regression analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between School Progress and school enrollment numbers, R[superscript 2] = 0.278. The results of this study can provide educational leaders with valuable insight on the non-academic factors that can positively impact the academic performance of their schools and districts. By examining the relationship between overall extracurricular participation rates and the A-F accountability rating scores of selected Texas public high schools in TEA's education service center regions 10, 11, and 12 during the 2018-2019 school year, this study places special emphasis on extracurricular participation rates as a means of positively impacting the academic performance of Texas public high schools.
