A Descriptive Study of Educator Differences about the Role of the Professional School Counselor
LaTrenda R. Watson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, St. Thomas University
Professional School Counselors have been utilized in different ways within the K-12 school system. Administrators may assign the school counselor tasks that may not coincide with the laws and standards. The purpose of this descriptive study was to understand educators' differences about the role of the school counselor. The school counselor's role has three significant areas: social-emotional learning, academic & career readiness, and interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. These areas are provided directly from the Texas Education Code (TEC), which presents the law for the school counselor's activities. The school counselor must provide a comprehensive school counseling program. There are four research questions that guide this study. The first three research questions are based on the TEC, the regulations for the activities school counselors must conduct within a school. A conceptual model of the Authentic Leadership Theory guided the fourth research question. Data was gathered from a researcher-developed questionnaire. The questionnaire directly referred to the TEC regulations concerning the school counselor's role. A convenience sample of administrators and school counselors provided their opinions about the school counselor's role. The findings provided a relationship of agreement among administrators and school counselors about their understanding of the school counselors' role. The study implications are that administrators should understand the school counselor's role so that the utilization is within the regulations and standards. The need for school counselors is great. However, there is also a need to ensure that school counselors are being utilized to support the school in a comprehensive manner.
