Relationship between Socioeconomic Status and Incidence of Specific Learning Disability: A Quantitative Study
Nora Nevarez
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
This quantitative study used a linear regression model to determine if a relationship exists between one independent variable (i.e., Socioeconomic Status) and one dependent variable (i.e., Specific Learning Disabilities). State level data was collected from publicly available databases in the State of Texas that delineate the percentage of students diagnosed with and placed in special education under the umbrella of Specific Learning Disabilities. These percentages were aggregated into the 20 Texas Educational Regional Service Centers. Additionally, national data was collected from publicly available databases listing the percentage of students at or under the age of 18 years old living at or below the federal poverty level in each county in the State of Texas. This data was then averaged by counties in each of the previously identified, 20 Texas Educational Regional Service Centers. Then, the data from the independent variable and dependent variable were analyzed using a linear regression analysis. This was done using the Statistical Program for Social Science (SPSS). The results indicated a strong, positive relationship between SES and placement in special education under SLD; therefore, rejecting the null hypothesis.
