School Counselors' Perceptions of Their Roles and Responsibilities in a Suburban Area in Texas
Melody Cantu
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Texas
The increasing demands in the field of education in the 21st century have caused high stress for educators, including school counselors. School counselors in the 21st century are more specialized and in greater demand than ever before because of the intensity of issues facing students in schools; however, the trend of assigning noncounseling duties might interfere with school counselors' ability to provide counseling services to students. This quantitative descriptive study began to fill a gap in the knowledge base regarding how much time school counselors in a suburban area in Texas spent on both counseling and noncounseling roles and responsibilities and their perceptions of the stress, job dissatisfactions, and ability to provide effective counseling services as a result of noncounseling duties. A Likert-type survey was advertised on two private online professional networking groups for school counselors. Thirty school counselors responded to the survey. School counselors reported their weekly time was spent 66% on counseling duties and 34% on noncounseling duties. The results of the single regression model indicated that increased noncounseling duties had a significant impact on school counselors' stress level, job dissatisfaction, and ineffective counseling. Although an omnibus analysis of variance indicated significant differences on level of ineffective counseling among groups by grades taught, individual group comparisons did not demonstrate significant differences, as measured by responses to the survey.
