Teachers' Perspectives Regarding Teacher Behavior and Its Influences on Bullying of Obese Students in High School
Tyra M. Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This research was carried out to assess high school teachers' perception of the bullying of the obese in a mid-size high school in north-eastern Texas and the role they could play in resolving the problem. The review of literature indicated that the bullying of obese students has continued unabated because of the lack of a unified strategy to confront it. Furthermore, the responses received from the randomly selected teachers revealed that the lackluster approach to solving bullying of the obese has not been due to ignorance of the prevailing problem but the lack of strong will-power for the total engagement of all stakeholders -- teachers, parents, students, school bus-drivers, school cafeteria workers, school sports couches and directors, school counselors and school administrators -- in a comprehensive and consistent plan of solving this problem. Teachers teaching high schools have also acquiesced to the presence of bullying in high school and admitted their failure to engage in any concerted action to intercept, prevent, or adequately punish those who bully the obese. This research has therefore revealed and suggested that the bullying of the obese is an ongoing social problem that can be resolved.
