This qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of first-generation Black male students attending a Historically Black University utilizing transition factors impacting their successful transition as perceived by the student. Schlossberg's Adult Transition Theory (Goodman et al., 2006), for the theoretical framework, online survey and interviews as the methods of data collection (Creswell, 2018), eight themes emerged to express the participants' experiences on successfully transitioning: inclusion and self-awareness, resilience and not giving up, perseverance and view of advisor/faculty, adapting to the new environment, maturity and positive attitude, connections were critical and personal and institution support. The findings of this study may be utilized to inform higher education faculty, staff, and administrators about what the students experience while transitioning from community college to four-year university. Administrators can use this information to examine, revise, expand, and/or prepare support mechanisms for these students upon their entry into higher education.
