A Phenomenological Case Study of Expanding Global Citizenry in Northeast Texas through Study Abroad Opportunities
Davis, Jennifer
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explore students' attitudes toward the concept of global citizenry after a study abroad experience for students at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. Participants were purposively sampled from the pool of students that have participated in short-term study abroad experiences. The researcher conducted interviews focused on these students' study abroad experiences. The overarching themes that emerged included cultural empathy, interconnectedness, and personal enrichment. Findings of this study led to the recognition that study abroad experiences do shape student attitudes toward the concept of global citizenry. These results corroborate prior studies indicating the utility of study abroad as a means to develop students' global citizenry.
