How Students' Big Five Personality Traits Manifest in Social Loafing Behavior: A Case Study of Group Assignments at a Southwestern U.S. University
Sherif, Dalia M.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine how students' personalities are expressed in social loafing behavior for university-level group assignments in a university in the state of Texas. The case study added further depth and breadth to what is already known about social loafing in cooperative learning by providing information about the personality of the perpetrator. The qualitative case study was based on the overarching question derived from the problem statement addressing how student personality is expressed in social loafing behavior for university-level group assignments. The faculty interviews and students' surveys revealed that Openness to Experience and Conscientiousness were not expressed in social loafing behavior for university-level group assignments assessed by four IPIP facets. Openness to Experience assessed by facets of values (being unconventional), ideas (being curious) actions (being wide interests) and fantasy (being imaginative) was not expressed. Faculty and students indicated that loafers were not curious, barely prepared, with very short attention spans after which they get lost. They also indicated they showed no originality, no active imagination, and no deep thinking. Conscientiousness assessed by facets of achievement striving (thorough), dutifulness (not careless), competence (reliable, efficient), and order (organized) was not expressed. For Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, some facets were expressed, and others were withheld. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
