Impact of Texas Public School Board Members' Level of Training and Professional Development on Superintendent Tenure
Flores, Alexandro Miguel
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas A&M University - Kingsville
The role of the public school superintendent, with its increasing challenges and demands, can be considered one of the most daunting roles in American public education today. Consequently, frequent turnover in the top leadership position inhibits many public schools from reaching set academic, financial, and organizational goals. As a result, any factors which may affect superintendent tenure such as the training and preparation of school boards should be studied and analyzed. For the purposes of this study, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with 250 public school board members from 39 Texas public school districts experiencing superintendent turnover in 2016 was carried out. Participants were grouped into three levels according to their number of training hours. Tenure of corresponding departing superintendents served as the dependent variable. A significant difference was found between exceeded and deficient levels of training and professional development of school board members. Recommendations suggest further research on the subject of the effects of school board member training and development on the quality of school board-superintendent relationships.
