Out of the Academic Closet: Heteronormativity, Hidden Curriculum, and the Experiences of Lesbian and Gay Students in Higher Education

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Sam Houston State University
The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of lesbian and gay students in higher education with respect to heteronormativity, overt and covert discrimination, and the hidden curriculum that is occurring in higher education. This researcher explored students' perceptions regarding their choices of majors, professors, and extracurricular activities. In addition, this researcher investigated any experienced or perceived discrimination that the research participants endured as a result of their sexual orientation while on campus. A phenomenological study of 5 lesbian students and 5 gay students at a 4-year public research university in southeast Texas was conducted. This qualitative study was conducted through the use of in depth interviews with each research participant to examine their experiences of the participants as they relate to their sexual orientation. Interpretation of participant interview data revealed three themes: (a) fitting in, (b) curriculum infusion, and (c) campus initiatives. Lack of LGBT themes in the course of instruction has enabled hidden curriculum and heteronormativity to be present in the classrooms. Additionally, the harassment that the participants experienced in classroom, on campus, and in the town of the research site, caused the students to be uncomfortable. Each of the students sought out companionship from other members of the lesbian and gay community and expressed a desire for the institution to do more to promote diversity including seminars and a center dedicated to the needs of LGBT students and increased counseling services. Results from this study can be used to assist the institution's administration in creating programs to provide better services to these students.
