Creating an e-History of the Board
Frederick, Francie A.; Hankins, Rhonda
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v15 n4 p29-32 Jul-Aug 2007
Gathering and displaying governance documents and photos online can help educate the public, promote transparency, and preserve historical artifacts. Under the leadership of a board chair with lifelong interest in history and respect for the historical record, the Office of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System has discovered that understanding the history of the board and making historical documents widely available serves both practical and scholarly purposes. Providing greater access to unpublished and unofficial materials also contributes to the transparency of the board and complements the spirit of the sunshine laws that apply to most public universities. The authors describe how accessibility to the Texas system board archives is building a sense of shared culture among board members and professionals, providing a better appreciation of the historical record and previous decisions that can help the current governing board move forward most strategically. Greater appreciation for what has been accomplished results in a better future for the university system as a whole.
