Culture and Children.
Browne, Gayle; And Others
Developed by the Texas Department of Human Resources' Child Development Division, this guide supports and encourages the integration of cultural diversity into children's programs; furnishes basic information related to race, ethnicity, and culture; and briefly considers some issues associated with the concepts. While not dealing in depth with all Texas heritages or with individual programs, the guide samples activities and resources which focus on positive cultural experiences for children and provides direction for caregivers developing such programs. Part I, "Basic Considerations," presents the relationship between culture and the child's personality development. It explores the role that culture plays in learning and the importance to the child of the relationship between home and the child's day care program. The role of the family as a cultural unit is examined, and six cultures are presented in depth. Part II, "Enriching the Environment," discusses the importance of the environment in multicultural programs, explores such diverse topics as displays, clothing, toys, and food, and emphasizes ways teachers can develop their own unique environment in the classroom. Part III, "Communication," discusses the use of communication in creating pride in the unique features of other cultures, similarities between cultures, removing prejudices about traits and traditions, and involving the five senses so children will build a memory bank of cultural experiences. The areas explored are language, literature, music, dramatics, games, and festivals. Part IV,"Resources," suggests many community groups and organizations as resources for children's multicultural experiences. A nine-page bibliography ends the guide. (DST)
