Identical instruments and procedures were used to collect data on military orientations from 98 Black boys who attended predominantly Black high schools in nonmetropolitan East Texas and 111 Blacks attending an all-Black high school in Houston, Texas, during the spring, 1966. The hypotheses tested were (1) that nonmetropolitan Black boys have more positive orientations towards military service than metropolitan Blacks and (2) that lower-class metropolitan boys with high occupational aspirations have more positive orientations than other metropolitan youth. The hypotheses were evaluated using data from Black high school sophomores. The specific orientations examined are desire to enter the military, anticipation of military service, certainty of this expectation, and general attitude towards participating in the military. The findings indicated that all of the nonmetropolitan and metropolitan boys were favorably inclined towards military service, and lower-class Black yough with high aspirations were not more favorably inclined toward participation in the military than other Black youth.
