Are We Putting Community in the Community College? A Mixed Methods Study on Success Outcomes in Underrepresented Students
Amanda O. Williams-Jordan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
Underserved students, such as African Americans, first-generation, or those with low-income backgrounds, often face more obstacles when it comes to postsecondary education. In response, many colleges now offer supplemental support programs to increase their chances of success. This study examined two groups of underrepresented students at a community college in Tennessee, comparing those who received structured supplemental support through a retention program and those who did not. Results revealed that retention program participants were more prone to attend classes unprepared, use financial aid services, and report a lack of familial support. Even with these additional risk factors, they were likelier to engage with student organizations and reported greater social integration. This study contributes to the growing research on postsecondary education retention and offers valuable insight for underserved students at two-year institutions.
