The four guiding principles behind the blended, competency-based, personalized learning model of Valor Collegiate Academies, a charter organization serving grades 5-12 in Nashville, TN: (1) Reflect the diversity of both our country and local community; (2) Personalize a student's experience to meet his/her unique academic and non-academic needs; (3) Leverage a strong school community to create self-directed learners; and (4) Develop a new approach for selecting, training, and retaining great teachers. The two-page grantee profiles from Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) provide factual information about the secondary school and postsecondary degree program designs awarded grants under NGLC's third and fourth waves of funding, which focused on two areas, "Breakthrough Models for College Readiness" and "Breakthrough Models for College Completion."
