English Programs in Church-Related, Senior, Liberal Arts Colleges in Tennessee.
Thigpen, Charles Allen
This study surveyed and described the organizational administration, faculty, and curriculum in the field of English at 22 church-related liberal arts colleges in Tennessee. To obtain information about the English programs, interviews were used, as well as school catalogs, questionnaires, and visits to the schools. Some of the findings were that 12 of the schools had programs in which only English courses were offered; 7 of the schools combined English and courses from other areas; the duties of the chairpersons of departments were similar; of the 143 members of the English faculties in the schools studied, 140 held at least the Master's degree, three held the Specialist's degree, and 56 held the Doctor's degree; the average teaching load of English faculty members for all schools was 13 hours each week; teachers most frequently used lecture/discussion as a teaching method; and the volumes of English literature and language in the school libraries varied widely.
