Literacy Education for Nursery School Children of Cross-National Marriages in Taiwan
Yeh, Yu-ching
Education 3-13, v42 n1 p89-100 2014
In the past decade, more and more Taiwanese men have married women from Southeast Asian countries and China. Children of cross-national marriages now account for one-tenth of primary school pupils. Previous research on primary and secondary school pupils' performance in different subjects has indicated that the children of cross-national marriages have a lower literacy performance than other Taiwanese students. Therefore, story-reading groups were organised to provide early literacy intervention. Volunteer university students participated in the story-reading groups and read stories to the young children at two public nurseries. The story-reading groups represented a model of co-operation between nurseries and the university. The story-reading groups benefited both the young children's literacy and university students' gaining of practical experience in the nursery profession.
