Samuelsson, Gillis; Sundstrom, Gerdt – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1988
Statistics on place of death, validated against longitudinal evidence on entrance into nursing homes, shows the "final" rate of institutionalization to have risen in Sweden between 1938 and 1975. Issues concerning who is institutionalized and why appear more important than precise measurement of rates of institutionalization. (Author/NB)

Gendell, Murray – Monthly Labor Review, 1998
From 1965 to 1995, the United States, Germany, Japan, and Sweden all experienced a decline in the average age at which workers retire and an increase in the duration of retirement. Sweden and Germany particularly face elder dependency burdens, which may increase in the United States in the coming decade. (JOW)

Fried, Hedi; Waxman, Howard M. – Gerontologist, 1988
Describes Cafe 84, a day program in Sweden for survivors of German concentration camps, which offers organized but informal activities so that members can socialize and discuss current feelings and memories. Claims large membership as well as reports of reduced symptoms and increased well-being are evidence of program's success. (Author/ABL)
Descriptors: Day Programs, Foreign Countries, Jews, Older Adults

Berg, Stig; And Others – Gerontologist, 1988
Discusses the Swedish experience in which the official old-age care policy has been to substitute home care for institutional care. Found some substitution of the two forms of long-term care which took place from 1965-75, but thereafter the use of long-term care institutions and home care remained stable or contracted. (Author/ABL)

Skog, Margareta; Grafstrom, Margareta; Negussie, Birgit; Winblad, Bengt – Nurse Education Today, 2000
Swedish nurse trainees (n=18) each followed a dementia patient through their training period. Themes emerged related to trainees' role as a personal guide. Creating a relationship with the patient and seeing the patient as a teacher were instructive experiences. (SK)

Wise, Lois Recascino – Gerontologist, 1990
Examined effects of Swedish partial pension system on workforce participation among older workers. Findings suggest that policy implementation altered pattern of work behavior among older men, but not among older women. Changes in pension compensation rates appear to have affected participation in partial pensions, including number of participants…

Thang, Per-Olof; Warvik, Gun-Britt – Education and Ageing, 2000
Older adults in Sweden lack access to funding for education and training, a gap partly filled by popular education. Barber, Gerard M.; And Others – Educational Gerontology, 1992
Demographic trends show that areas such as Kentucky, Japan, and Sweden are experiencing very limited labor force growth and heavier reliance on older workers as the younger population declines.
