Sexuality and Disability--A Matter That Concerns All of Us.

Intended as a training manual for medical, educational, and institutional staff who work with disabled adolescents and adults, the booklet seeks to provide basic knowledge and dispel common myths surrounding sexuality and disability. Translated from Swedish, chapter titles and selected subtopics are as follows: (1) "Sexuality and Disability: A Matter that Concerns All of Us" (distinction between the concepts of disability and handicap; reactions of able-bodied persons to questions and problems concerning sexuality); (2) "Start Talking with Each Other" (staff evasiveness in dealing with sexual problems, the role of self-esteem in establishing personal relationships, attitude change, providing information in support of positive sexual identity for disabled persons); (3) "Sex Roles--Threat or Possibility" (developing alternatives to compensate for a disability, providing realistic information to the mass media); (4) "Sexuality and Sexual Interaction" (sexual rights; changing or improving sexual interactions; sexual aids and sexual rehabilitation); (5) "Reducing Dependence" (adolescent liberation and sexual knowledge; staff attitudes and professional responsibility; including sexuality in rehabilitation; starting study circles and discussion groups for staff, disabled persons, and their families).
