Statistics on place of death, validated against longitudinal evidence on entrance into nursing homes, shows the "final" rate of institutionalization to have risen in Sweden between 1938 and 1975. Issues concerning who is institutionalized and why appear more important than precise measurement of rates of institutionalization. (Author/NB)

Geographic distance and contacts between adults and their aging parents in Sweden vary by social class as well as by social mobility of the offspring. Middle class adults live further from their parents and have less contact with them. Degree of contact is quite similar between social classes for those who live near their parents. (Author/ABB)
