A Meeting of the Minds: Learning about the Eastern Hemisphere and Creating Citizens of the World
Sheehan, Kevin; Laifer, Larry
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v24 n1 p14-18 Sep-Oct 2011
Working at the sixth grade level, the authors write about their effort to interest students in current events and their historical roots. This article outlines a series of learning experiences and assessments that the authors created for sixth grade students at Lockhart School in Massapequa, New York. These learning experiences culminated in a conversations and dramatic "tableaus" led by the students themselves. The activities reflect what social studies educator Grant Wiggins identified decades ago as "doing the stuff of social studies." (Contains 7 notes, 1 table and 1 figure.)
