This viewpoint article offers a rationale of why collaborations between art educators and art therapists are needed and provides an example of an effective art education/art therapy collaboration/program designed for adolescent girls who have experienced adverse childhoods. Art educators can provide opportunities to create art in a social context that engages the students in a practice that focuses on the exploration of personal and social ideas and/or identities in visual form. Specifically, for adolescent girls who struggle with issues of self-esteem, mental health, and past traumas, transformational art education programs can have healing value. Together, art educators and art therapists can promote powerful and thoughtful action in educational settings.
