Factors That Affect Retention and Graduation in Minority Students in Colleges
Santana, Evelyn J.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This Action Research with a survey component study examined the various obstacles that lead to minority student's lack of persistence and failure to graduate two and four year colleges and universities. Minority students have many obstacles that start at a very early age that prevent them from being academically competitive, and travel with them throughout their K-12 academic careers. This puts them at a disadvantage at the college level; they are not prepared academically, socially, or financially. This research and study considered the factors that are an impediment as well as the various ways that educators can assist this student population. A series of six seminars were developed in areas most needed by this population including, but not limited to finance and academics. Participants included a sample of thirteen mostly minority adult students enrolled at a Partnership Site (off-site) during the Fall, 2021 semester at an independent college located in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The surveys utilized in the seminars found that all participants (100%) found the seminars to be effective and useful for their college education. The surveys were developed with open-ended questions, as well as an area to provide commentary on areas not specifically asked. Participants overwhelmingly felt that the added support would help them persist through to graduation. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
