Responding to an Active Assailant: Public High School Staffs' Perceived Preparedness

Were those gunshots I just heard? Between 1990 and 2014 school shootings more than tripled when compared the prior 30-year span of 1960 to 1990. FBI data from 2000-2013 shows active violent incidents were resolved or ended due to citizen engagement of the perpetrator in 16.2% of the total incidents. Common police response times to an active shooting can take from a few minutes to fifteen minutes or longer, which explains why regular people at the scene of an incident have taken the opportunity to thwart the attacker. Do your teachers perceive they are prepared to respond to an active shooter incident and prepared to keep their students and their selves safe? This research study surveyed school staff members from two southeastern Pennsylvania public high schools to determine if a correlation existed between planning, training/drills, and principal preparedness to the staffs' perception of their ability to respond to an active shooter incident. The data showed a strong positive correlation between planning, training/drills, and principal preparedness to a teacher feeling they can respond to an active incident. Prepared, not scared, school staff need a mindset of preparedness and a plan they can implement if a school incident were to occur. For school administration and legislators looking to improve school safety, the focus should be on professional development time for training and drills connected to a crisis plan. School principals need to be vigorously and completely involved in all aspects of school safety planning and training because a prepared principal highly correlates to staff feeling prepared for an active shooter.
