Stauffer, Michael B.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delaware Valley University
This mixed-method double-blind study was designed to examine the relationship and impact of mindset, grit, and the influence of family members in the postsecondary goal selection process of students in one rural high school in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The population for this study consisted of twelfth grade students (N = 135). The study was designed in two parts to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data was collected from a sample size of (n = 85) by combining a brief background information questionnaire, The Revised Implicit Theories of Intelligence ("Self-Theory") Scale, and the Short Grit (Grit-S) Scale into one data collection instrument. The qualitative data was collected via three focus groups and consisted of a representative sample (n = 17) of the senior class to the extent possible. The quantitative portion of the study revealed no significant relationship between mindset, grit, and student's postsecondary goals. However, the focus groups revealed students do not fully understand the influences that shape their postsecondary career decisions. It was evident through the findings, student career decisions are impacted by memorable experiences with a family member or from involvement in school activities, courses, clubs, or interactions with teachers throughout their high school education.
