Organization and Administration of the Duplicate School in Philadelphia, Pa. Bulletin, 1924, No. 24
Montanye, Edwin Y.
Bureau of Education, Department of the Interior
The educational advantages and the housing economies effected by the work-study-play plan have led administrative officers to adopt some form of this organization in many school systems. The plan is variously designated as the "platoon plan," "alternating school," "companion class method," or "duplicate school." Although this form of school administration is operating under different names in the various cities of the country, there seems to be considerable agreement as to its purpose, namely, to improve the instruction and to make a more efficient use of the school buildings. Since this method of school administration is receiving so much attention in city, State, and national organizations, it is the purpose of this study to examine into some of the main considerations involved in the introduction and administration of the new system, as demonstrated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Contents include: (1) Introduction; (2) Distinction between the "duplicate school" and the "platoon school" in Philadelphia; (3) The duplicate school building; (4) Organization; (5) The roster; (6) The auditorium and its usefulness; (7) Special rooms; (8) Assignment of teachers; (9) Time allotment; (10) Supervision; (11) The duplicate school's advantages for the pupils; (12) Economies effected; (13) Conclusion.
