An evaluation was conducted of the Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) experience-based career education (EBCE) program at the end of a three-year operating period. Evaluation data were collected in the following ways: (1) regular meetings with the project coordinator and EBCE staff; (2) on-site observations of program activities; (3) results from pre- and posttesting of students; (4) inspection of employer evaluations of students; (5) interviews with students; (6) telephone survey of parents of students in the program; (7) conversations with resource persons at experience sites; (8) results from employer questionnaires; and (9) inspection of attendance records of the students. Results indicated that EBCE program implementation was successful in providing a viable educational alternative. The program met the needs of a group of students who might not otherwise have remained in school and provided career exploration opportunities which motivated some of the students to continue their education. Still other students received employment opportunities as a result of their participation in the program. Two factors identified in the success of the program were location of the program in a facility other than the high school building and quality of the staff. While the program was successful, it never reached its full potential in terms of number of participants. (BM)
