This document defines and provides common curriculum goals in social studies for Oregon public school students. The goals were designed to define what should be taught, while allowing local schools and districts to decide the specific context of instruction. The contents include: (1) design; (2) organization; (3) building a local program and implementation; (4) a district level implementation chart; and (5) common curriculum goals. Ten strands of knowledge are outlined: (1) economic understandings; (2) political understandings; (3) geographic understandings; (4) historical understandings; (5) cultural and social understandings; (6) communications and study skills; (7) thinking/decision-making skills; (8) interpersonal/participation skills; (9) constitutional/democratic heritage; and (10) civic values and responsibilities.
