Career Information Motivates At-Risk Youth.
McKinlay, Bruce; Bloch, Deborah Perlmutter
OSSC Bulletin, v31 n5 Jan 1989
This report addresses the concern that too many youth leave high school without constructive plans for the future. Career planning helps some young people develop a sense of connectedness leading to commitment and follow-through. The Career Information System (CIS) is an interactive, computer-based system helping students explore occupational and educational options in a personal way. First implemented in Oregon, CIS was developed for state and local use; now 360 schools, colleges, rehabilitation agencies, and other organizations belong to the Oregon CIS consortium. Also, a National Career Information System provides software, information, and technical assistance to CIS entities in 16 states. Drawing on a 1987 large-scale CIS survey and other research, this monograph discusses the ways that CIS programs help at-risk youth. Chapter 1 describes the survey research and addresses characteristics of high-risk youth and causes of the problems they face. Chapter 2 describes CIS in detail and explains why career information seems helpful to this population. Chapter 3 discusses elements of successful programs and introduces three model programs and related material (reproduced in Appendices B, C, and D). The final chapter presents guidelines for schools desiring to implement or improve a career information program for at-risk youth. (Survey results, additional model programs, and planning material appear in "Reducing the Risk: Using Career Information with At-Risk Youth," a 1988 CIS publication; appendix A contains ordering information). Included is a bibliography of 29 references. (MLH)
