Based on a pilot project in ten Oregon high schools, this adopter's guide describes a training program designed to prepare high school students to be mentally and emotionally healthy parents. Three overall curriculum goals are identified: providing practice in clarification of personal values and responsible decision making, clarifying and strengthening self image through interaction with young children, and introducing realistic expectations of parenthood through dealing with concepts which promote physical and mental well being. Program teaching methods include the use of lectures, videotapes, values exercises, films and direct experience at schools or child care facilities in the community. The guide is divided into six sections: (1) deciding whether to adopt the model (assessing potential community support, resources and finance), (2) planning program operation (defining organizational and personal roles and responsibilities, and setting management objectives), (3) founding the program (securing field sites and maintaining community support), (4) implementing the program (orienting and training teaching staff and child care personnel), (5) operating the program (identifying curriculum goals and instructional guidelines), and (6) planning and conducting summative and formative evaluation. Appendices include a project overview, the program adoption budget summary, a sample budget for an on-campus child care center, the pre-parenting preservice format, a student skill checklist, an interim evaluation report, and a sample 18-week schedule of classes.
