Oklahoma and the United States Constitution: A Selected and Annotated Bibliography.
Million, Anne
This annotated bibliography focuses on the constitutional role of Oklahoma by highlighting the constitutionally significant cases that arose during the territorial period and after statehood. The intention is to bring important constitutional issues closer to home, and thereby create an appreciation for the Constitution as a vital, living instrument of the government. No attempt has been made at comprehensiveness. Rather, the cases and other studies selected for inclusion are those that illustrate a decisive change in constitutional thinking or represent a milestone in constitutional development. An introductory essay provides background information on how Oklahoma entered the mainstream of constitutional development. The bibliography is divided into three sections. "Historical Background" contains 7 items on Native American beginnings and 13 on border disputes. "Civil Rights and Liberties" contains 39 items on black-white relations, 18 of which are education-related (most deal with desegregation at the college level, e.g., "Social Forces in the Admittance of Negroes to the University of Oklahoma", and "The Negro Teacher and the Fourteenth Amendment"), and 22 items on individual rights. "Governmental Relations and Powers" contains 22 items. Approximately one-third of the items listed in the bibliography are legal cases. Descriptive annotations are provided for all items. (JB)
