Time for a Change
Simonyi, Stacy
Knowledge Quest, v35 n3 p24-29 Jan-Feb 2007
This article describes how the author changed a gloomy and outdated library into a cheery and welcoming place for teaching and learning. When the author was hired as the new library media specialist at Tri-County Career Center Library in Nelsonville, Ohio, the library was antiquated, uncomfortable, and not geared for the present-day hills of computer technology or teacher collaboration. In an effort to convert this forgettable storage space, the author began to clean, weed, and bring to life the underused and underappreciated library--a process that was to take her the entire year. A few months after being hired, in preparation for the first meeting with the principal and superintendent, the author went back to all her library school notes and read everything in the library literature databases that related to facilities planning. She even developed a list of what the library needed, which helped her create a picture of the library's makeover. As she was making necessary small changes to get the current library noticed, the author was also making decisions that would help make the future library more functional. All the small changes, as well as the remodel being made, has helped communicate to the entire community what a great place for learning the library could be. As the year drives on, more and more students are checking out items from the library, and more instructors are taking notice of the library. (Contains 1 figure.)
