Measuring the Second-Year Transformational Experience Program (STEP) at The Ohio State University
Kennedy-Phillips, Lance C.; Uhrig, Kellie J.
New Directions for Student Services, n142 p83-88 Sum 2013
As part of The Ohio State University's ongoing commitment to redefining the student experience, the university is creating a Second-Year Transformational Experience Program (STEP) designed to lead to higher graduation and retention rates, improved student engagement and satisfaction, and postgraduation success. Institutional data show that a second-year residential experience enhances student success. Ohio State students who live in residence halls for two years have a higher second-year retention rate (95.7 percent) than all other students from that same entering class (91 percent). By reviewing Ohio State's National Survey of Student Engagement data from 2010, it was found that students who live on campus are more likely (82 percent) to participate in campus activities than those who live off campus (64 percent). The university has identified this type of participation as a key measure of student success. Through a university-wide effort, the decision was made to enhance the education of students beyond the classroom through a groundbreaking second-year program. The University's Board of Trustees approved a pilot program for a thousand second-year students who chose to participate. The assessment plan detailed in this case study is based on that pilot program. (Contains 1 table.)
